The Young Marines wins its fourth Telly Award
Thursday, May 09, 2013

The 34th annual Telly Awards have been announced, and a June, 2012, broadcast of the Young Marines News Network won a 2013 bronze Telly in the online video category. This is the fourth Telly Award the Young Marines have won.

Young Marines News Network wins a Telly AwardThe Telly Awards, founded in 1979, honors the finest film and video productions, groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films, and outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs. The awards program’s mission is to strengthen the visual arts community by inspiring, promoting and supporting creativity. It receives more than 12,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

“The Young Marines’ accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Telly Awards.

The bronze-winner, the Young Marines News Network, is a quarterly online video broadcast that serves as a resource for news about The Young Marines. The purpose of the network is to showcase the good works being done across the country by Young Marine units, to serve as a fresh new communication tool, and to thank sponsors and supporters for their commitment to the Young Marines.

“Winning a Telly Award is really exciting news,” said Mike Kessler, national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines. “We continue to work hard to get the message out about the amazing accomplishments of our Young Marines and valued adult volunteers. The Young Marines News Network is only one medium we use, but we like the idea of using this medium in recognition of our members and announcing important events. We have to send a special thanks to Dave Harl and his team at Pinnacle Productions in Lexington, KY, for their hard work in making this possible.”

The Young Marines News Network, founded in 2011, serves multiple purposes. It is part video news release and part news report. The broadcasts are posted to the national website at http://www.youngmarines.com/.

Much of the success of the televised online content depends on Young Marine units across the country informing national headquarters about what their units are doing in their communities and of their local achievements. Young Marine units “pitch” their own story ideas for consideration. If a story idea is picked up by the Young Marines News Network producers, units are notified of the proper submission guidelines unique to their story.

“Our network news is all about showcasing something a unit has done that might benefit other units,” Kessler said. “It’s all about sharing ideas.”

Other Telly Awards the Young Marines have won include:

  • Our Flag, in collaboration with DEFY: Silver (DEFY is an acronym for: Drug Education for Youth supported by the US Navy and Marine Corps)
  • Young Marines Promotional Video: Silver
  • Young Marines 50th anniversary (2011): Bronze

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 300 units with 10,000 youth and 3,000 adult volunteers in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Germany, Japan and affiliates in a host of other countries.
