The Young Marines sponsor teen race car driver Zach Veach at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach is a mover and a shaker – literally. The 18-year-old finished fifth in the Firestone Freedom 100 on Coors Lights Carb Day on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, racing during Memorial Day weekend with the support of The Young Marines youth organization.

“It was really great to show the support of the military on such an important Memorial Day weekend with the sponsorship from The Young Marines on my car,” said Veach. “My race didn’t go quite as planned, but I had a beautiful view of the finish; I just wish I was a little closer to it. I stayed in the draft through the last 15 laps, but with five to go, I started falling back. It was a good run for us. We’ll get them back on the short ovals.”

Zach VeachVeach started his month of May by serving as a guest speaker for the third consecutive year at the annual Young Marines Adult Leaders Conference, in Reno, NV. He spoke to nearly 500 adult volunteers about the partnership with the Young Marines organization and the shared values of anti-bullying and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

The Young Marines have sponsored Veach’s race program for the past three years and they have partnered together to encourage youth to serve as leaders and remain drug-free. As part of the partnership, Veach is an honorary Young Marine and carries the organization’s far-reaching message across the country.

As Veach returned to the Brickyard as one of the youngest licensed race car drivers in the country, there was plenty of fanfare for the young athlete. He was fastest in opening practice earlier this month and the only driver to top 190 mph on the speed charts.

"Zach was fully charged, ready to go, and he ran a super race in his first attempt at the iconic Brickyard,” said Mike Kessler, national executive director and CEO of The Young Marines. “His ‘take no prisoners’ style of racing balances nicely with his continued desire to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. This young man personifies the very values that our organization endorses, and we are proud to have our name on his car."

The athlete also had a special book signing at Indy Reads Books, where he talked about his first book, “99 Things Teens Wish They Knew Before Turning 16,” and answered questions from a bevy of young fans in attendance. In addition, he sat down with legendary television and radio host, Larry King, to talk about his career on the racetrack and his work for The Young Marines and others in his community.”

Competing in INDYCAR’s “Mazda Road to Indy” Firestone Indy Lights Series, Veach is completing the final stepping-stone to a career in the IZOD IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500. In 2012, he captured the Formula Car Challenge Winter Series Championship, his second straight winter series championship following the 2011 USF2000 Cooper Tires Winterfest Championship.

In 2010, Michael Andretti signed Veach to his team, Andretti Autosport. That same year, Veach was named one of CNN’s “Intriguing People.” In 2011, he was named by ESPN Magazine as a NEXT athlete in motorsports and by Sports Illustrated as a “Face in the Crowd” in 2012. He was voted the “Most Popular Driver” in both 2011 and 2012 in USF2000 and Star Mazda.

In addition to his racing and drug free lifestyle, Veach is an advocate for safer driving. He has worked alongside Oprah Winfrey for bullying prevention. Along with Dr. Oz and his daughter Zoe, Veach headlined a national anti-bullying campaign through the Cyber Safety Academy’s “No BULL Challenge.”

The Stockdale, OH, native will graduate from high school on Sat., June 8. He’ll return to the racetrack for round five of the 2013 Firestone Indy Lights season which will be at 2 p.m. EST, Saturday, June 15, at The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, WI, and shown nationally on NBC Sports Network.

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 300 units with 10,000 youth and 3,000 adult volunteers in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Germany, Japan and affiliates in a host of other countries.
