IWO JIMA OUR VISIT TO HONOR By YM/MGySgt Molly Carino Rogue Valley (OR) For a few days this past March, I was graced with the opportunity to attend the annual Guam/Iwo Jima trip. During our time on the island, we were able to dive into the history of WWII and Guam’s role in it. The historical aspect of the entire trip was truly memo- rable. We were able to experience the history by seeing exactly where momentous actions took place.Along with visiting Guam, we were able to set foot on the island of Iwo Jima.Along with ten other Young Marines,we were all allowed to climb to the top of Mount Suribachi. The ability to see where the iconic flag raising occured was truly humbling. Imagining what it was like to walk on the sands of Iwo Jima back in WWII is, well, un- imaginable. The best part of the entire trip, was meeting all of the WWII veterans. Being able to hear their stories and what it was like, was truly spectacular. Among all of the trips during my Young Marines career, this is one I will never forget. Iwo Jima: Humbling and Unforgettable Our time on the island was up, so we packed our things up and headed back to our airplane. The heat was beating down on us as we hiked through the empty island. The entire experience was deeply moving and there are no real words to describe all of the pain and sacrifices endured on that island long ago. This trip has been one of the most life chang- ing events of my life, and I encourage all Young Marines motivated enough to compete for a spot on this trip. It truly is once in a lifetime op- portunity.
