YM/MSgt Sophia M.Righthouse was selected to be the Grand Marshal of the 23rd Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos Parade in the City of San Diego, honoring her as a “Hometown Hero”. [“Peñasquitos” is Spanish for “small cliffs”, referring to San Diego County’s nearby Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve].The parade and fair were held on May 6,2018,and attracted more than 15,000 attendees. In recognition of her life-saving efforts during a recent fire Engine Company 40 of the San Diego Fire Department gave YM/MSgt Right- house a special tribute by provid- ing her a ride in the station’s fire engine. With the encouragement of the firefighters on board, YM/ MSgt Righthouse operated the air horns and sounded the sirens to the joy and cheers of the crowd as they traveled the parade route. A platoon of Miramar Young Marines proudly marched in the parade and provided a Color Guard. At the end of the parade route YM/MSgt Righthouse, (also a Cadet Seaman 3rd Class in NJROTC) was congratulated as she stepped from the fire engine. After the parade, Young Marines circulated throughout the fair and distributed Young Marines informa- tional materials with Drug Demand Reduction pencils and stickers.All the Young Marines who participated in this event were outstanding! - Submitted by Bret A. Righthouse, Unit Commander, Miramar (CA) Young Marines Miramar: DDR, Padres, and Proud Participation in Peñasquitos Parade MY YM UNIT On March 15, 2018, the Miramar (CA) Young Marines con- ducted a Color Guard on Montgomery Field during San Diego Council Member Chirs Cate’s State of the District Address.The Young Marines in the Color Guard were YM/SSgt Allen Tu,YM/ PFC Harmony Philpott, YM/MSgt Sophia M. Righthouse, and YM/ Cpl George Arthur. On April 14,2018, Young Marines from the Miramar unit con- ducted community service work on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar at the Family Fun Fair. Our Young Marines assisted the Marine Corps Community Services set up and take down the event. The Miramar Young Marines also staffed its own booth, handing out Drug Demand Reduction mate- rials and spread- ing the word about the Young Marines program. On April 28, units of the 2nd Battalion, Southern California Regiment conducted a Color Guard at the San Diego Padres baseball game. More than one hundred Young Marines and their families were in attendance. The Color Guard consisted of members of the Mira- mar Young Marines and the Temecula Valley Young Marines.The Col- or Guard Members were Southern California Regiment YMOY YM/ MSgt Sophia M. Right- house, YM/Cpl George Arthur and YM/LCpl Harmony Phillpott from the Miramar Young Ma- rines and YM/MGySgt Cameron Kendall, YM/ SSgt Preston Kendall, and YM/Sgt Jeremy Jae- ger from the Temecula Valley Young Marines. There was an incredible roar from the crowd as the Young Marines took the field.The Young Marines (as always) did a fantastic job!
