Buesing Young Marines had the opportunity to support our local Marine Corps League 708 at the Brookridge Memorial Day event. This day was more than a day off of school and work for our unit. We left this event changed on the inside. We provided a color guard and as- sisted in the flag ceremony. During the memorial ceremony, we were all moved by the meaning of the folds of the flag and the memories of those who served our country. The room was speechless as we all reflected the meaning of this day. --Submitted by Candi Cook, Adjutant, LCpl Brian R. Buesing (FL) Young Marines A Meaningful Memorial Day By YM/LCpl Mikayla Cole Boston (MA) Every year, towns and cities across the country conduct Me- morial Day parades. This year, the Boston (MA)Young Marines were honored to participate in the National Memorial Day parade in Washington,D.C.Not only did they participate in the parade, but they were also able to learn some history during their four day long stay. Saturday morning, the Young Marines met at 0800 at the Westwood Train Station in Westwood, MA. They traveled for 8 hours by train to reach our nation’s capital. The Young Ma- rines checked into their hotel, then toured the city. They began at the Reflecting Pool located in front of the Washington Monument. Next, they went to visit the Korean War Veterans Memo- rial, the WWII Memorial, and the Vietnam Vet- erans Memorial Wall. On the way back to the hotel, they passed the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol. Once back at the ho- tel, the Young Marines were allowed some free time where a few enjoyed some swim time be- fore lights out. The next day, the Young Marines went to go see the National Museum of American History, and the National Air and Space Museum. After visiting the museums, the Young Marines took a short break, then continued on their tour. They were able to get a closer look at the Lincoln Memorial as well as the Jefferson Memorial. After all the excitement, the Young Marines returned to the hotel for chow. Some finished off their day with a swim before lights out. Monday was the big day. The Boston Young Marines as well as Young Marines from all over the country marched in the National Memorial Day Parade. Before the parade began, the Young Marines had the pleasure of meeting Colonel Bill Da- vis, who is the Young Marines National Executive Director. The Boston Young Marines were also introduced to Young Marines from across the country. The Boston Young Marines were paired with an organization named Capital Caring to carry the Betsy Ross Flag. After completing the parade, we watched the remaining parade. We were introduced, and shook hands with Desert Storm veterans. We expressed our gratitude for what they have done for this country. The recognition be- tween Young Marines and veterans was one of the most amazing experiences of this trip. The respect that was shown to one another showed that Young Marines and United States Marines value honor and loyalty. Following the parade, the Young Marines went to chow and followed with some down time. They began to pack for their departure on Tuesday. Tuesday morning they arrived at the train station at 1000. They spent the train ride ex- changing stories and talking about their favorite moments of the trip. This was a trip that we will never forget and hope that we are given the same opportunity next year. Boston: We Participated in Washington, D.C. Parade Above: While in DC, Boston YMs met Young Marines National Executive Director Bill Davis and stopped by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. On Sunday May 29th, I attended at the annu- al Marine Memorial ceremony in Golden, CO, organized by the Marine Corps Memorial As- sociation, a part of the Marine Corps League. As they have done in the past, they reached out to the Young Marines for help, and the Young Marines stepped up. Two units were in attendance, Douglas County and Flatirons Young Marines, as well as two Young Marines from the Buckley Field unit who fell in with them. To open the ceremony, the Young Marines performed a color guard. I was honored to be guest speaker. The Young Marines were in formation during the entire ceremony. They looked like a single unit, you would have never have known that they were from three different units from two different Battalions. I was very proud of the job they did. More than one hundred veterans and their families in attendance. --Submitted by GySgt.
