I learned so many new things, I bond- ed with the other kids in my unit and some from the other units in our Battalion. All five units from our bat- talion attended, with almost 100 Young Marines present. It was great, we captured two of the other units Guidons, which they had to earn back. Then ours was captured, but we were able to trade back. We had an outstanding Map and Compass course set up by our unit staff in which we had to eliminate zombies by squirting them with water pistols. We also got to go hiking, and dur- ing the hike we stopped at a lake to sit on the docks and take our boots off to cool our feet in the water (we even saw some fish jet away from the smell... just kidding!). During recreation time it rained, so we had relays in the rain. We got insanely muddy. We also played Tug-of-War and most of the Staff went up against some of the kids, and that was pretty funny. Although the weather didn’t cooperate as we had hoped it would, and we got stuck in the middle of a torrential down- pour on the last day, we still had fun. I don’t think any amount of rain could have dampened our mood. I am very glad I got to participate in these activities with some great people, and I can’t wait for the next time we have an encamp- ment. My First Encampment: Friends, Fun, Rain... and Zombies! Division IV: YM Units Get Together for a Field Day By YM/MSgt Evan Venezia JPSO 2 (LA) Last May, Division IV Young Marines participated in a multi- unit field day hosted by The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Young Marines. Units from Orleans Parish, Plaquemines Par- ish and Jefferson Parish were involved. Ninety-one Young Ma- rines were present at the event, including fifty-eight from the host unit.It was planned to be a fun day with the units mixing and matching in an effort to get to know each other better. Activities included various team-building exercises such as relay races, and other competitions. And there was plenty of free time for all to just talk and enjoy each other’s company. Lunch was provided by JPSO.Everyone enjoyed the grilled hot dogs with all the fixings. Young Marines Deputy Director of West Coast Operations Joe Lusignan was present, as well as Young Marines Market- ing Director Gary Weisbaum, along with a great video pro- duction crew. Interviews were conducted with Young Marines from all the units, as well as Registered Adults. Twenty Reg- istered Adults were present and had as good a time as the Young Marines. We hope our involvement in this activity helped our efforts in encouraging Law Enforcement agencies to get involved with sponsoring units. The partnership is a good one, as our mission and goals closely match. We serve our communities, and work against the scourge of illicit drugs and abuse of prescription drugs. We had a great time.
