My Young Marines unit, Mid-Cumberland Young Marines, started out for Quantico, VA on early Saturday morning June 25th, 2017. We were all super excited and packed into two huge vans for the ten-hour trip from Tennessee. When we arrived we were all worn out from the trip and retired to our rooms for the night. The next morning, after break- fast, we headed to the United States Marine Corps Museum in Quantico. The museum is HUGE! There were old and new tanks, and very realistic displays of Marines at war. There was history dating back to the American Revolutionary War. My favor- ite was the display of the LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel) Higgins Boat used by WWII soldiers to transport sol- diers to beach landings. On Monday, we geared up for a long day. We headed to see the monu- ments in Washington DC. The Lincoln Memorial was my favorite. The staue of Abraham Lincoln is huge! However, the coolest thing that I saw that day was the Washington Monument it- self... if you lie down at the bottom of the monument and look up it, you feel like it is a direct bridge to Heav- en! On the last day in Quantico,we swam and relaxed for the first part of the day. Then later in the day, we all got ready and headed out to see Arlington Cem- etery and the Tomb of the Unknowns. We also saw the Marine Corps parade which was very inspirational. Their technique was very precise and eye-opening to me. We then were able to see the changing of Guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and that was very hum- bling! Upon leaving we were able to see Arling- ton National Cemetery. It’s such a awe inspiring sight with all the monu- ments lined up perfectly and when you realize how many soldiers have died for our freedom, a sadness envelopes you. Wednesday morning we all woke early to get packed up and start the long trip back to Tennessee. We were all tired from the awesome experiences, so the trip back was a little more subdued. We were all excited to arrive back home and tell our families all about our ad- ventures. I will definitely go back again someday and really appreciate this op- portunity I was given with my fellow Young Marines. To D.C.
