For those who do not know, ALS is the last of three lead- ership schools in the Young Marines program. It was such a great expe- rience to go to Oregon this year for the school. One, if not the best parts about ALS are the friendships you make. It was great to see old friends there that I haven’t seen in a while and also meet some new faces. ALS is conducted over a two-week period. The first week you are learning as you would at a normal leadership school. During the second week, you become an instructor. This is the important part, a week where you learn many things. You learn your true leadership style, your friends’ leader- ship styles, how you and your group perform under pressure and stress, and so many more things. It’s a lot to take in at first but in the end, the feeling of satisfaction saying “We just graduated a school of over one hundred.” is indescribable. Even though it is a strenuous two weeks, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back and do it all again. My hope for you is that you will decide to take that next step and attend these leader- ship schools, grow within the Young Marines program and experience the friendship of Young Marines from across the nation as I have. I enjoyed the schools so much that I now intend to go back as Young Marine staff where I am sure I will have the same if not a better experience. For all of the Amazing ALS classes to come-- I believe you can do it. Good luck and Semper Fi. Taking the next step: Attending Advanced Leadership School. Growing Within the Program: Advanced Leadership School On the weekend of July 15-17, 2016, the Ohio Regiment conducted their very first Ohio Regimental Games competi- tion that consisted of 9 units comprised of 135 Young Marines and 44 Regis- tered Adults who converged at Camp Lazarus in Delaware, OH. They competed for the Regimental Commanders Cup, now known as “The Buckeye Cup”. The “Buckeye Cup” is a traveling trophy that the winning unit gets to display at their headquarters until the following year, where the units will again compete for the coveted cup. The Young Marine units represent- ed were Butler County, Central Ohio, Chesty Puller, Cincinnati, Greater Ak- ron, Greater Cleveland, Miami Valley, Richland County and Northern Kentucky from Division 2 that also included Divi- sion 2 Young Marine Of the Year YM/SgtMaj Caleb Maurer. There were 5 main competitions that compose of the Ohio Regimental Games, as well as smaller fun competitions for individual awards for the participating Young Marines. The main events were comprised of a color guard, drill team, marksmanship, field skills (fire build- ing, knot tying, shelter building), and orienteering competitions The smaller event competitions in- cluded in the games, but were not scored towards the overall award- ing of the “Buckeye Cup” were human foosball, gaga ball, kickball, air rifle, tag football, disc golf and the obstacle course. At the end of the weekend, the Regi- mental Games were a huge success. The Young Marines who attended the encampment had the opportunity to earn several awards that included the Drill Team Competition Ribbon with Silver Palm, and the Encampment Rib- bon with Silver Palm. Congratulations to the Central Ohio Young Marine Unit for winning the inaugural Buckeye Cup Trophy! We hope to see you all back next year for our 2nd Annual Ohio Regimental Games and Encampment. -- Submitted by Chris W.
