The Punchbowl is the very informal name given to the National Cemetary of the Pacific which was established in 1948 as a memorial to those who perished in the attacks in December of 1941. We joined the mass formation there and honored the fallen of the Pacific on the fateful day,December 7,1941.Many other units from across the country were there also. Afterwards, we waited to have our picture taken with the memorial stone for the fallen. After the picture was tak- en, we were called us to attention. Two of the unit members were going to be promoted. Now Lance Corporals,YM Hawk and YM Smith were promoted by the Young Marines National Executive Director, Bill Davis, and the 2016 YMOY, YM/Sgt- Maj Joseph Bacon. It would years before any of the Young Marines there would forget about that day. Davidson County: Honoring the Fallen at The Punchbowl By YM/Cpl Jacob Toledo Orlando (FL) Devil Dogs On our trip to Hawaii we learned a lot of information about the attack and how much it af- fected us.The whole trip was amazing but the most enjoyable part to me was the laying of the wreath. We went up the hill to see the wreath placed by Young Marines. It was a astonishing site to see from above and the speech SgtMaj Anthony Spadora (the guest of honor) gave inspired and motivated me. Hawaii was amazing and spectacular in many ways, and the parade was lots of fun, too. An Amazing and Motivating Trip to Hawaii By YM/MGySgt Molly Carino Rogue Valley (OR) I had the opportunity to attend the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu,Hawaii. This trip was incredible and I had an amazing time. There were plenty of activities around the island including hiking, surfing, and snorkeling. I stayed in the barracks on Marine Corps Bay, Hawaii, along with other Young Marines from around the nation. The beach cleanup that took place on the base was a great way to help out the community while having a bit of fun at the same time. The hike to Sniper Hill on the base was a great teamwork and morale booster. There were many Young Marines from across the nation all helping each other and motivating them. The history entailed in the base was memorable. Seeing the USS Arizona Memorial was captivating and emotional. Being able to meet the veterans and hear their stories is truly a great opportunity and something to tell others. The ceremony at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, was heartfelt and very heartwarming. Meeting all of the Young Marines that were there was incredible. I got to meet some old friends while meeting new ones as well. The parade was the final activ- ity of the trip. We were able to see bands and other groups from around the country. Some Young Marines carried ban- ners, others carrying banners with the faces of the lives lost, all marched down the street proudly. This trip is something that cannot be described in words. It’s a once and a lifetime opportunity and I encourage Young Marines to raise funds and attend next year. An event like this truly makes you feel grateful for those who have sacrificed so much. Their sto- ries are something to pass on for generations to come. I will never forget this once in a lifetime opportunity. Rogue Valley: The Experience Cannot be Described in Words
