On the first evening, Monday, our parents had us report in at 1600. We set up our racks to sleep in. On the second day, we all did PT. We had a Beach run in the Sand. Seeing the Ocean and having the waves come close to us was really neat. We all ate Breakfast.Young Marines took turns having “Galley Duty”, or working in the Kitchen preparing the meal and clean up afterwards. We had some free time,so we built sand castles, and som eof us boo- gie boarded at the beach. We had more beach time in the evening, and we gathered at the Camp Fire and had Smores and told Sea Stories. Our third day began with PT.We did stretching exercises, and then had a formation Cadence run.At the Pull up bars we did upper body building workout. We then had the privilege of visiting Active Duty U.S. Marine Amtracks. There were also Navy Mid-shipmen attending the Amtrack training. It was great to see the U.S. Marines in action. In the afternoon we had the opportunity to support the local Police of Vista City. It is called “Hug a Police Officer”.We helped set up all the different volunteer group tables and tents. Then the Police Officers arrived. We all gave the Police Officers a hug.All the Police Officers were very surprised. The Police wanted pictures of everybody. They were glad that our youth really care about the City Police. It was a great Com- munity Service event to support the Police. Our fourth day (agian) began some PT, then we ate break- fast.We then went to the beach for 3 hours. After lunch I was assigned to teach the Young Marines about the Environmen- tal Award Ribbon. After that we went on a nature walk. Dur- ing the nature walk we found a new lagoon. This lagoon was next to the original ocean. I had the Young Marines gather different leaves and rocks and shells and save them for their Environmental project. After the nature walk we went to the calm beach and stayed there for a little bit. We came back, ate dinner and started to play jeopardy. During the jeopar- dy game we were very excited at answering Young Marines Knowledge questions. After a few more question we went to sleep ready to start a new day! On our fifth day,We conducted PT at the Marine Confidence Course near the beach. All the Young Marines had fun on the course. After the course we went to the WWII Amtrack museum at Camp Pendeton.A Marine gave us a tour of every WWII and Korean War-era Amtrack. After the amazing tour we were given challenge coins and shirts. We went to the beach to practice playing volleyball. After volleyball we went to the calm beach. Next we had evening chow and we made a fire with Mr. Siegmann’s help. We filled our stomachs with smores and scary and funny sea stories then went to sleep. On the sixth day, we awoke and saw the beautiful sunrise. This was our day to be assigned Galley Duty. We learned how to set up the chow line. After cleaning up the chow line and doing dishes,we went to the beach and played volleyball games. It was males against the females. We played five games. The females won 3 out of 5 games. Everybody was practicing good sportsmanship. Next morning, Sunday, we had revile, breakfast and had the privilege to attend religious services at the U.S. Marine Chapel. After chapel service we conducted Kayak training. We received all the safety instructions and wore floating vests and went out Kayaking. It was very peaceful out on the water. We even observed fish jumping out of the water. After kayak- ing we then had another swim on the beach. In the evening we had to pack up and clean everything. The next morning we had our last breakfast. We thanked our Unit CO & XO, for the entire week. We wish to thank our parents for the privilege to be in the Young Marines. I have been on a few encampment with other groups, but this beach encampment will be remembered by everyone that attended. We had such a great bonding time, and thank the Lord for everything we experienced. BY LCpl Michael Manley Atlantic Coast (FL) Happy New Year to every- one, especially our ACYM staff. Without them we would not be able to do all that we do and keep growing. They are all so special. They don’t just teach us or tell us what to do. They actually do it with us! Sometimes adults want you to do something, and know how to tell you but don’t actually do it themselves. Not our staff...they do it all! When we are on an encampment and rappel down a tower, so do they. They don’t just tell us how to greet people, they greet people the same way. They don’t just want us to volunteer with Veterans or the community because it looks good, it is actually important to them and they all take the time to talk with people there. They don’t just teach DDR because we need the hours, Ms. Gibbons always tries to teach us about it when there is an opportunity because she cares for our safety. They don’t just want us to get promoted because they need senior young marines, they answer questions and do sign offs on their own time. They always offer to help, drive us, take us places, but the most important thing is that they all are the best people I know. They act the way they tell us to act (and not just when we are watching). We have the greatest Staff! The ACYM unit is lucky to have all of them volunteer their time to be with us. We are excited to learn from them in 2017 and will work hard for them.We appreciate what you do for us all year, every year. Happy New Year 2017!
