Atlantic Coast YMs: From Florida to Washington, D.C. By YM/LCpl C. Ponder Atlantic Coast (FL) Atlantic Coast Young Marines recently took a 7-day trip to Washington D.C. On that trip we saw many things in our nation’s capital, from the famous memorials, to museums, even the Pentagon. Since we returned home from the trip, we were very ofte- nasked what was our favorite thing we did while we visited Washington. By YM/GySgt Brandon Mathews Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office (LA) Last October, thirteen Young Ma- rines from our unit assisted in set- ting up and working the various booths at a local Anti-Bullying Walk event. Some of us also served food and beverages. This event was host- ed by“Families Helping Families” of Jefferson Parish. As you know, bullying is a ma- jor problem in our schools. It can take many forms. The sponsoring group is very concerned with spe- cial needs children, Autism, and how those children are affected by bullying. Bullying is bad in any form, but when special needs children are targeted, it’s even worse. At the end of the event , we helped break down and police the area. The event organizers were im- pressed appreciative for our service. They told us that we did a great job. This is the third year we have assisted with this event and we look forward to it every year. Helping others, especially those less fortunate, is always an honor. I hope I am given this assignment next year. By YM/Sgt Emma Forcier Imagine School North Port (FL) There are Young Marines all over the nation, but only two Young Marine classes that go on during the day, and my unit has one of those classes. During a school day, many kids have regular electives like P.E., art, technology, weightlifting, and more. But at Imagine School, North Port, FL, we have a Young Marines class. In the class we do many fun things including unit organizations, planning trips, learning new marching tech- niques, we have replica drill, do work on projects, we earn new ribbons, and much more. One thing that really helps with this class is that you are able to take your promotion tests without having to take time off drill. The class is really helpful to the Unit Commander and the other Young Marines that help orga- nize the drill because we just do it during class. You can also practice colorguards without taking time off drill and it’s easier to work with. Imagine School: ASchool Offering Young Marines Classes
