After doing this , I think so, too. I volunteered at the traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial, and it was maybe one of the most important things I’ve done with my unit. I handed out water to visitors and veterans, and I even had a chance to look at the names of the fallen from the Vietnam War. Semper Fi! Traveling Vietnam War Memorial Offers a Time to Reflect By YM/PFC Michael Manley Atlantic Coast (FL) The Atlantic Coast Young Marines volunteered to help in a Halloween community event. Moosehaven is a Retirement Community for seniors 65 years of age and older in Orange Park, Fl. Every year, a free event is held for their community. They have trick or treating, a movie on the lawn, and even a haunted house. Atlantic Coast Young Marines were invited to volunteer for this great Halloween event. Some Young Marines dressed as zombies to scare people in the haunted house. Our XO, Gunny joined us and it was so much fun! Our unit com- mander, Ms. Gibbons set up a Drug Demand Reduction table. Since this was an event with a lot of children and families, this was a great time for us to pass out items warning of the dangers of drugs. Some of our Young Marines helped Ms. Gibbons and gave out candy to the trick or treaters. The DDR table was a big hit and people really appreciated it. This event was awe- some because besides just helping with community service, we were also able to have a lot of fun. The residents at Moosehaven are always so nice to us and enjoyed having us there, too. It was a Happy Halloween for all of us! Atlantic Coast: We Visited A Familiar“Haunt”for Halloween Atlantic Coast Young Marines used the opportunity to hand out DDR literature. In May of 2016 Former Orlando Devil Dogs Young Marine Sarah Garvis was crowned Miss American Achievement 2016 – 2017 by the Women of Achievement (WOA) Pageant Sys- tem. In March of 2016, she was crowned Miss Florida WOA and she immediately used her title to make a difference. She says she owes a debt of gratitude to the Young Ma- rines, who helped her become a better leader. While train- ing for the Nationals with a goal to represent the State of Florida Sarah used the Young Marines Drug Demand Reduc- tion motto, Living a Drug Free Lifestyle. She incorporated Enrique “Kiki” Camarena’s philosophy that “One person can make a difference”. Sarah will spend the year with the American Heart Association, Voices for Children and the Young Marines Pro- gram. The Women of Achievement was established to award women who make a difference and at age 19, Sarah Garvis is truly making a difference. --Submitted by John Gionet, Division 3 Commander Orlando Devil Dogs (FL) Former Orlando YM Wins State, National Titles Sarah Garvis, Miss American Achievement. By YM/PFC Bryce Dunlap Greater Cleveland (OH) Along with my fellow Young Marines, we had the best time of our lives at summer camp.We played basketball and swam for a couple hours a day.We all had fun. Mr. Morgan, one of our staff members, helped me pass my swim test, and I want to thank him. Our Young Marines are great here in Greater Cleveland. We still are given Drug Demand Reduction train- ing , and we have fun, a lot, like in our physical training. Greater Cleveland: A Great Summer Camp White Water Rafting!
