Master Sergeant Richard Barber,USMC, (Ret.), diligently served 1st Florida Regi- ment as the Unit Commander of South Florida Young Marines since 2011, and served as the Alpha Battalion Command- er for the past two years. His willingness to act as the 2017 regimental summer encampment commandant is what made him a candidate to receive the Meritori- ous Service Medallion. at the 1st Florida Regiment’s Annual Adult Leadership Conference in October. Barber has since added 3rd Division Assistant Command- er to his resumé. The Regiment’s goal to provide an incentive for Young Marines and Regis- tered Adults to expand their area of ex- pertise and volunteer beyond the unit and battalion level was conceived by 1st Florida Regiment’s Executive Staff. Also known as the Harrison Award, this is the highest award made by the Regiment to Registered Adults or Young Marines who lead by example and get things done at the Regimental level. 1st Florida Regiment’s 14th annual Adult Leadership Conference was held in Orlando, Florida, October 20-22, 2017 and was attended by 65 registered adults representing all of the regiment’s 18 units. In addition, 45 Young Marines held their 9th annual symposium. A full day of training was capped off by the awards banquet Saturday evening. The Regimental Meritorious Service Me- dallion was named in honor of Shawn Harrison, former Young Marine then Reg- istered Adult for Nature Coast Young Ma- rines in Crystal River, Florida. Harrison’s passion for the program, unwavering desire to serve his country and its youth, and boundless energy epitomized the highest standards of the Young Marines and made him a role model for all who knew him. Harrison passed away in 2010, but his legacy will continue. -- Submitted by Elizabeth Reichow Young Marines of the Big Bend (FL) Adjutant, 1st Florida Regiment The 1st Florida Regiment’s Adult Leadership Conference Adult Leaders Call or Click For FREE Samples 1-800-277-8989 CountryMeats.com/sample Sell For $1! 45% Profit! By YM/ LCpl Malachi McCarthy Quartz Hill (CA) Community service is defined to be voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. I recently had a chance to serve my community at the American Legion Star Post #309 for a Tree Planting Ceremony. This ceremony honors police officers that have passed either in the line of duty or were retired and passed. My team for this event helped the elderly if they needed any assistance to walk up steps. At the conclusion of the ceremony and lunch, we helped out with cleaning up. Towards the start of the cer- emony my Unit Commander told me that I would be leading the Pledge of Allegiance and I was very happy (as I am a new graduate) and I felt proud. Many people at the ceremony told my team and I that what we are the future leaders of this world if we keep doing what we are doing. When I heard that, I felt extremely proud.I also was able to meet many veterans and po- lice officers including the Sheriff of LA county, Sheriff Jim Mc- Donnell. I also met the division six commander, Mr.Wilson Lee, for the first time. I had no idea that my Division Commander would be there. I thank my unit commander,Mr.Chinchilla, and Division Six Commander Mr. Wilson Lee for encouraging me to write this article. A Ceremony to Honor Fallen Law Enforcement Officers
