I was honored to be chosen to be in the color guard as the Color Sergeant. It was a privilege to march down the street as a unit and show people the pride I have being a part of this amazing group of drug free youth. When we stopped in front of the judges’ booth we all turned and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The judges gave us a standing ovation. As we continued to march on, we heard the loud cheers and ap- plause from the spectators. It was another proud day in my career as a Foothills Young Marine. By YM/Cpl Julia Jones Tampa Bay (FL) During a weekend last May, my unit (Tampa Bay), Imagine School at North Port, and YM/SgtMaj Poe from DeSoto (FL) Young Marines went to Masonic Youth Camp. We worked on some field skills. My favorite (and also my fellow Young Marines’ favorite) was learning knot tying. We learned square lashing, double figure eight knot and several more. We put our skills to the test by building a ladder out of bamboo and rope. The Young Marins Corporals and Sergeants had the opportunity to work towards their Map and Compass ribbon, which was really fun. Florida Young Marines Learned Knot Tying and Map and Compass Skills By YM/Sgt Delaney Miller Macomb County (MI) Relay for Life is a cancer awareness fundraiser. I have been a part of the Young Marines program for the past 3 years, but this was my first year working at this event. Relay for Life is a life-changing event. It gives you an opportunity to learn other people’s stories. You learn so much about what they deal with in their fight against cancer. Relay for life is also a fun time to bond with other Young Marines. From walking miles to staying up 24 hours, the day can get long. But as Young Marines, we learn to push through. At this year’s Relay for Life I had the opportunity of be- ing a team captain, which meant attending many meetings at Young Marines and after school. Team captains are also in charge of fundraising for our team. All the money we raise goes towards the fight in finding the cure for cancer. I strong- ly suggest that your unit become involved in a Relay for Life event and join the fight. Macomb County: Relay for Life Fundraiser is a Life-Changing Event Young Marines Esprit ONLINE 9
