Today, the Eagle Young Marines attended the swim qualification training. First, we learned how to breathe while swimming, how to float, and how to swim safely.Next,we learned what to do in an emergency situation in water. One example would be we would be falling in the water while fully clothed. The Marine Water Instructors taught us different ways how to float, like tying our pant legs together and swinging it over our heads, putting air into them, and simply blowing air in them.We also learned how to use our blouses. To make sure that we all knew how to make ourselves float, they told us to choose a floating style and go in the deep end of the pool for fourteen minutes. They thought us how to swim safely (like dead men), back floating, free style, side stroke, and breast stroke. They thought us to breathe calmly, so we can know when we are in an emergency in water, we know what to do. I am glad my parents have enlisted me in the Young Ma- rines. I feel much safer going into the water now. By YM/Pvt Madiline Meiss Eagle (CA) I’ve been in the Young Marines for about a couple months now and so far now my best, most fun experi- ence was taking part in the St. Patrick’s Parade in San Di- ego. I always would be the per- son to watch the Parade, but this time I am a Young Marine and our unit will be marching in the St Patricks Day Parade. My Parents will be watching. Our Unit had to drive to San Diego where the parade was going to take place. I saw a many people that had big smiles on their faces and were excited. Our Senior Young Ma- rines taught to focus on the marching we were going to do while carrying the large, colorful United States Flag. We had to make sure to never let the flag touch the ground. Young Marine GySgt Kendra Base encouraged us and made sure we all did our duty. I enjoyed the fact that we didn’t give up at all even though it was tough to keep it from touching the ground be- cause the wind was gusting. We got through it all. While we were marching, we could hear the Parade announcers saying “Com- ing up next are the Eagle Young Marines“ and we would all smile as we heard all the applause and cheers that were for us to hear. We were then all thankful and proud for having each other there carrying the United States Flag. After the 4-mile parade route we folded the Flag and headed back to Camp Pendleton and had a hearty meal. The Eagle Young Ma- rines has really helped me a lot. I’ve really enjoyed the new things I’m learning and friends I see each weekend. I’m glad my parents put in the program.
