The experience that was provided was fun and educational all at the same time. Our instructor taught us the steps to CPR to the beat of the song Stayin’ Alive and with a strobe light. We even learned how to use an AED device and Epi-pen. Our first aid class also trained us how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on an adult, child, infant, pregnant woman, and a dog. We all learned valuable life-saving information. -- Submitted by Candi Cook, Unit Adjutant LCpl Brian R. Buesing (FL) Young Marines In Florida: Stayin’Alive, Stayin’Alive... Guadalupe Valley Young Marines were invited to par- ticipate in a 4th of July cer- emony for the SS American Memorial in Seguin, TX. This event was to honor Vietnam Veterans this year. We con- ducted the opening Color Guard and a POW/MIA cer- emony where our Young Ma- rines placed a cover/hat from each branch of the military on the table of the POW/MIA and perform a very slow hand salute. In attendance were ap- proximately 200 people, and while the Young Marines ex- ecuted this ceremony, it was quiet and very solemn. After the ceremony the Young Marines were invited to enjoy a home cooked potluck meal. The Memorial also included a fund- raiser for our program. We are raising funds to attend the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day and sold squares for a Chicken Poop Bingo game. We earned $1,000 that day! The chicken was ready but it wasn’t until the third go around that the chicken’s “droppings”... landed on a square that had been “sold”! I sup- pose with all the humans around it was a little nervous too! So along with the formal event, there was still some fun to be had and thinking out the box to raise money for our unit. --Submitted by Dina Dillion, Unit Commander, Guadalupe Valley (TX) Young Marines Solemn and Lighter Moments on Fourth of July in Texas YOUNG MARINES ESPRIT ONLINE 5
