Ashtabula County Young Ma- rines traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii for the 75th Pearl Harbor Anniver- sary. We brought with us 12 Young Marines and Registered Adults. Being there for the week, we had many activities planned. Starting off the week we went to Pearl Harbor Park and visited the USS Arizona Memorial. Being able to see where this all happened was very impres- sive. My favorite part of Pearl Harbor Park was seeing the Tears of Oil still coming up. even after 75 years later. Fol- lowing Pearl Harbor Park we went to the USS Missouri and toured that ship. The next day we went to Diamond Head and hiked that as a unit. At the top we stopped for some very beautiful breathtak- ing views. Following that night we went to Polynesian Cul- tural Center where we learned about the different islands of Polynesia. Some other fun things we did throughout the week were surfing on the ocean (which is a lot harder than all the movies and pic- tures make it look!) snorkel- ing in the Hanauma Bay and going on a Catamaran Sail. The most important events of this trip were the Punch Bowl Ceremony at the Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and the Pearl Harbor Parade. At these events there were approximately 300 Young Marines from all over the country to re- member those who gave their lives for us 75 years ago on these islands. Before the Punch Bowl Ceremony, my unit went to the top and found the first man who died from Ashtabula County during the attack, Private Henry Kalin- owski. After the ceremony was over, we all gathered at the top of the cemetery and took a picture next to the Young Marines stone with the wreath. On December 7th, all the Young Marines gathered one last time for the parade. We were split into different groups that were selected for dif- ferent positions. Some had the honor to hold a banner, while some were honored to carry a flag with a picture of the men and where they were from that were survivors from the attack. Of all boys and girls in the country we were proud to honor them by marching in the Pearl Harbor Parade out of all boys and girls in the country. Overall, this was an amazing trip, one we will remember forever. I will never forget the feeling of the survivors handshakes. Mahalo! By YM/PFC Dennis Colon Orlando Devil Dogs (FL) I really enjoyed being able to participate in this event. I learned many things about Pearl Harbor. The highlights of the trip for me were the parade and the hike up Diamond Head Monument. The parade honored the 75th anniver- sary of the Pearl Harbor attacks. I got to meet different WWII and Pearl Harbor veterans. The veterans taught me what it means to sacrifice so much for the country. Some of them would not be able to go on the hike with us. The hike up Dia- mond Head Monument was physically challenging, but the view from the top was worth it. This hike taught me to push through just like the veterans are still pushing through the memories of that horrible day. The memories of this trip will stick with me for years to come.
