The chiefs nicknamed me “NOLA” (as in New Orleans, LA). They did so because they said I was the “most spirited”, like the city of New Orleans. My squadron was given the name “Yellow Jackets”, and issued identifying t-shirts as were the other squadrons. I enjoyed my visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum and the STEM flight simula- tor. I truly felt like I was piloting a jet. On graduation day,Young Marines National Executive Direc- tor, Colonel Bill Davis, was kind enough to honor us with his presence. This made for a wonderful ending to a wonder- ful trip. Oh, by the way, that’s me in the picture with the Colonel. What an honor and a thrill! I would like to thank JPSO Sheriff Newell Normand for making this experience pos- sible. Lastly, thank you, Colonel Davis for taking time out of your schedule to visit with us. National Flight Academy: A Place Full of Thrills By YM/MSgt Evan Venieza Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office (LA) I recently returned from the Sailing Adventure which took place on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. It was the maiden voy- age of this SPACES event. It was an amazing adventure, and I had the opportunity to meet Young Marines from all over the country. We learned how to sail and steer our vessel. We slept on board every night. I really like that the experience allowed everyone to perform all tasks and everyone was in the right place at the right place doing their job. We even got to plot the course we took. Everyone became friends quickly. We got to know each other really well. That was helpful be- cause sailing a vessel safely and efficiently is the definition of teamwork. My favorite part of the trip occured when a storm popped up out of nowhere. It was exciting. We did what we had to do,and the storm disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared.Sailing was a great experience and a lot of fun. I would definitely go again if chosen. I am certain this event will only get better, as this was the first time out. It is a great addition to the SPACES program.Thank you to Young Marines headquarters for giving me this opportunity.Special thanks to Young Marines Division 4 Commander, Mr. Chuck Jackson, who was our adult in charge during our adventure. 2016 SPACES Sailing Adventure in Chesapeake Bay By YM/MGySgt Elijah Rico Tarrant County (TX) As well as the National Leadership academy,I had the opportunity to attend the ORME adventure in Arizona with my brother, YM/ GySgt Tristen Rico. A week filled with fun with Young Marines from all over the country and some familiar faces from the academy. The week would be packed with ac- tivities in the crazy Arizona heat, but at the same time plenty of fun with fellow Young Marines. I was a part of the blue team,or as we called ourselves, the Blue Angels. The oldest group of the bunch, we participated in great activities. My favorites were the metal working class, the jewelry class, and the cooking class. Now I know you might be thinking,“Re- ally, Master Guns? A jewelry and cook- ing class?”, but in the jewelry class we made some pretty sweet bronze rings. In the cooking class, we made a huge number of cookies, cupcakes, and oth- er sweets. Besides, I was hungry and I hadn’t eaten chow just yet, so cookies sounded pretty good. The last of my favorites was the black- smithing class, because I had never worked with metal in that way before. It was awesome working with fire as well. We followed carefully followed all safe- ty rules.Other classes that I participated in were horseback riding, which was so fun, the fire prevention and protection class, and then firearms activity, and the archery activity. At the end of the day, it was always a pleasure in jumping in the pool with my fellow Young Marines, having fun in the pool and cooling off. If we didn’t use the pool we’d take part in camp teambuilding activities, which was so fun. It was great seeing fifty Young Marines running around the ORME school teaming up against the other camps to proclaim the best camp. The ORME Adventure was my first SPACES event, and it was an experi- ence I won’t forget. I loved meeting new Young Marines and clicking right away with those I met, and the Young Marines who I reunited with once more. Overall, it was an incredible experience!
