MY YM UNIT On September 9, 2017, the 2nd Battalion, Southern California Regiment, participated in the Poway Day Parade held in Poway, CA. The 2nd Battalion Young Marines marched to the cheers and applause of the crowd. The units in attendance were the Miramar Young Marines and the San Diego Young Marines. The Young Marines were outstanding! - Submitted by Bret A. This was my twenty-fifth color guard and third time at a Homes for Our Troops event. Helping Homes for Our Troops is a great example of why color guard is so great. You have the opportunity to perform before veterans, meet great people, and make some of the best memories as a Young Marine. Temecula Valley: Color Guard Among the Best YM Memories Exemplary Teamwork: Young Marines, Registered Adults, and Parents Raise Funds for Unit Some four months ago,the Camp Pend- leton Young Marines’ utility trailer was broken into and most of the camping equipment was stolen. My husband and I decided to host a garage sale to raise funds to replace the stolen equipment. Our family started going through our home, garage, and yard gathering items for the garage sale. Our son, YM/ LCPL Mat- thew Freese, passed out flyers to our neighbors asking for donated items to sell. Soon we ended up with furniture, elec- tronics, bikes, clothes, books, toys, and even a golf cart to sell. After many hours of orga- nization, the morning finally came.At 5 a.m., YM/LCpl Freese and YM PFC Aiden Sheehy, with the help of several registered adults, began the process of pulling everything out of the garage to sell. By 6:30 a.m. the crowds started coming. After 5 hours of selling, lifting, mov- ing, and helping we were able to raise $450. This is a perfect example of what teamwork is all about…Young Marines, reg- istered adults, and parents working together for a common cause that will benefit many others. -- Submitted by Laura Knight Freese, Camp Pendleton (CA) Young Marines Camp Pendleton: Exemplary Teamwork to Raise Funds for Unit By YM/Cpl Nathan Amaya Bakersfield (CA) In November, YM/Sgt Jimenez (YMOY of my unit), and Mr. Fuller (of our staff) and I went to the Quartz Hill unit (U/C Chris Chinchilla) for a drill day. YM/Sgt Jimenez and I decided that we should take a look at a different unit to see how things are done, to give us ideas for being the the squared away seniors at our unit. We arrived at around 0800, fell in, and as we began PT, some ideas were already occurring to us. After PT we transferred into our cammies and began drill. They told us what we will be learning while the three Young Marines of the Daniels family (two brothers, one sister) gave us visual instructions for marching, using the Senior Guide Book. We learned that close order drill movement in approximately ten minutes, which was really amazing! Later, at chow we talked to Young Marines about their unit, and much more. After we were dissmissed, YM/Sgt Jimenez and I had many ideas to bring back to our unit, thanks to Quartz Hill (CA) Young Ma- rines. Bakersfield: A Visit to Quartz Hill Brings Ideas 6
