We were able to visit many of the important battlefields and historical sites connected to the Civil War. We also had the opportunity to learn many interesting facts about all components of the War, ranging from the medical techniques, to the unique points of view of the Confederacy and the Union. We participated in a reenactment of the Civil War, practicing skirmishes (a tactic used in the Civil War during battle), con- ducting night watch, and seeing what it would have been like to be a soldier during the time of the Civil War. My favorite memory from the trip was meeting amazing vet- erans (including a World War II veteran) and many more inspir- ing people. While attending an evening parade at Arlington Na- tional Cemetery, I had a chance to meet and speak with two fe- male Marines personally about all the amazing things they’ve accomplished in the Marine Corps. On my Great American History Ad- venture trip I learned more about the history of our country, met many amazing Young Marines from all across the nation, and made memories of a lifetime. A Few Short Weeks Bring Memories to Last a Lifetime GAHA: Historically, It Was My Best Summer EVER! By YM/Sgt Grace Marie Clayton Billings (MT) For two of the best weeks this past summer, I went on an amaz- ing trip, the Great American His- tory Adventure (GAHA) Civil War. We started in Charleston, SC. We ended our trip in Washington D.C. On the last few nights of our trip, we understood what was to hap- pen to us, we learned together, cried together, laughed together, we all learned something about different Young Marines from different units. I want to inspire different people, and learn from them. Letting people into your domain or just meeting new people is one of the best things I experienced. On the last day of the trip we went to the National Museum of the Holocaust. The museum itself was different than anything I have ever seen, it was very emotional and upsetting to see what occurred during the Holocaust. There were shoes of the people that were sent to Concentration Camps or who had passed away. We learned to understand what had happened to the women, children, men, and ev- eryone else who had gone to the Concentration Camps. We were given time to adjust ourselves after this experience at the Mu- seum. On the day we were leaving, it was really upsetting to leave our friends. While packing the bags to head home, was hard realizing that it was time to leave. It was a great experience to meet people from 15 other States. This was an amazing experience. I suggest that if you enjoy History, go to GAHA next year! Young Marines met an acive duty female Marine while attending a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
